Introduction to Workplace Investigations Certificate Program

Session Topic
The purpose of this certificate program is to provide attendees with the fundamental knowledge and skills to conduct internal workplace investigations. This program contains training modules that cover preparing for an investigation, investigative interviewing, report your findings, and much more.
The duration of this program is 2-days and will be held on April 22 & 23, 2024 in Halifax. Lunch will be provided!
This program was developed with a singular focus: to give you the confidence to conduct an impartial and defendable workplace investigation with the highest degree of confidence.
Included in this certificate program will be a workplace investigations resources booklet which you can utilize to plan all of your future workplace investigations. This booklet includes useful templates, checklists as well as leading cases in Canada relative to workplace investigations. This booklet will also be provided to you electronically in order for you to utilize the documents contained in it.
What you will learn:
You will learn how to conduct a workplace investigation from the point you receive a complaint (or allegations) until when you submit your report.
Specifically, you will learn the following:
- How to screen a complaint
- How to plan for an investigation
- How to conduct an investigative interview
- How to weigh evidence
- How to write a fact-finding report
About the Facilitator
Devan Corrigan has several years experience conducting workplace investigations and has done so for such organizations as Resolute Forest Products, Canadian Pacific Railway, Canada Post Corporation, and Glencore Canada Corporation. Devan is the principal of the firm Corrigan HR Consulting which specializes in conducting workplace investigations including investigating cases of harassment, sexual harassment, violence in the workplace, employee theft/fraud, as well as other forms of employee misconduct.
Devan holds a Master of Industrial Relations from Queen’s University as well as an Honours Degree in Psychology and a certificate in Human Resources Management from Saint Mary’s University. Devan is also member of the Association of Workplace Investigators (AWI). In addition, Devan is the lead facilitator for the Mastering Fact-Finding & Investigation professional program offered by the Queen’s University Industrial Relations Centre (IRC). Devan has also published several articles for the IRC touching on various matters related to workplace investigations.
