MURPHY HEALTHCARE
Director of Talent, Culture and Experience

Please send your cover letter and resume, in confidence, to jmurphy@murphyhealthcare.ca, quoting the job title of this position in the subject line.

Do you get excited when you think about transforming the culture of a large organization?

Are you the type of person that notices the details that go into creating best in class experiences at places such as restaurants, hotels and theme parks?

Does the idea of leading the implementation of a game changing team member and client experience in a traditionally stodgy industry excite you?

If you answered yes to these three questions, you may have just stumbled upon a career defining opportunity.

Before we explain it to you, we should warn you. This career defining opportunity is in the healthcare sector. That usually scares people off because they assume that they need to have some prior knowledge of healthcare, or prior work experience in the sector.

You don’t. In fact, it’s better that you don’t.

At Murphy Healthcare, we are in the business of providing trusted care to our clients. We operate pharmacies, medical centres and retirement homes in Eastern Canada. We also have a few other non- healthcare businesses as well, including a banquet facility, a bowling alley and a real estate brokerage. We’ve been at this for 40 years and have won some national awards for client care and innovation.

We’re pretty good at what we do. And we have an amazing team. But we know we can do better for both our team members and our clients.

We want to transform our internal culture and client experience. We need to.

We’ll get right to the point….we aren’t talking about a new recognition program or new uniforms here.

We’re talking about a whole new way of doing business and treating people. If we don’t disrupt our industries, someone else will.

And ultimately, we are in the people business. People caring for people.

The good news is that you won’t be starting from scratch. We’ve already got some great ideas for a new vision.

We need someone who can see this vision, help us build on it, and most importantly….lead the implementation of this vision.

But we’ll be straight with you. It won’t be easy. People don’t like change, even when it’s in their best interest. You’ll probably be met with some resistance. Some people will tell you that you don’t understand how things are done around here. You may be told that “things have always been done this way”. You may be viewed as an outsider.

That’s all normal stuff and if you are the right person for this role, you already know that.

You’ll need to help them see how much better things can be. The good news is that you’ll have the support of your peers on our senior management team. And the support of our ownership group.

We all want to see you succeed. And hopefully have fun doing it.

If you’re the right person for this role, you’ll probably look back in3 years and be amazed at what you have accomplished. You’ll have disrupted two industries, and have created a world class experience for our team members and our clients.

Of course in 3 years what you have accomplished will all seem obvious to everyone else in hindsight, but that’s how things go. But you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you were at the epicenter of the changes that transformed the organization….and maybe even the profession.

About the position
As our Director of Talent, Culture and Experienceyou’ll be a key member of the senior management team. You’ll oversee a strong and stable Human Resources Department and lead the transformation of experiences for both our clients and our team members. While some may see HR and Client Experience roles as separate roles, we don’t. We think they are interwoven and are looking for a leader who can see that, and more importantly….implement it.

It’s important that you have experience in recruitment and retention, compensation and benefits, and policy and compliance. We need someone who can maintain and refine processes in these areas and keep the departmental infrastructure and processes running, but without getting too bogged down in the details.

Put another way, we are looking for a leader to maintain what has been built…while choreographing a best in class journey and experience for both our team members and clients. We need a process to attract the kind of team members who share our vision, and the training program to help them reach their full potential. And we need to choreograph a whole new client experience that that will transform our professions by providing a whole new value proposition to our clients.

It’s a balance that not many are cut out for. You’ll need to be able to lead a team of HR professionals, put systems in place and manage multiple priorities without taking your eye off the ultimate goal…which is transformation.

Professional Competencies
First and foremost, we need someone who can demonstrate that they understand the idea of creating an experience that is transformative and disruptive in nature.

Ideally you have done it before. Somewhere. On some level.

You need to be an implementer. We need someone who can design the implementation and roll it out, not just visualize it and talk about it.

Prior experience in human resource management is a must.

Degrees and designations are nice, but are no substitute for determination, creativity and common sense. Other than that, the rest of the requirements are common sense and probably don’t need to be listed. But we will, because we have learned that common sense isn’t always that common.

  • You need to be a team player. If nobody likes working with you this isn’t going to end well.
  • You need to have excellent writing skills and be able to use a computer. We don’t want to have to show you how to use Excel, for example.
  • You need to be likeable but also ok with not being liked all the time. That’s because sometimes you will need have to have tough conversations. And stand in front of tough decisions without wilting liketwo week oldMother’s Day flowers.
  • You need to be able to delegate and build a well-rounded team of people that make up for your shortcomings.
  • You need to understand that money doesn’t grow on trees.
  • You need to be open and honest, while maintaining discretion.
  • You need to be able to work autonomously. We are here to support you but we don’t want to micromanage you.
  • But you also need to be able to admit when you are in over your head and ask for a life raft. We don’t want to see you drown.
