This year’s Employment Law Seminar will focus on two topic areas – creating a diverse and inclusive workplace and bullying and harassment in the work place.

Creating a Diverse and Inclusive Workplace

Creating a diverse and inclusive workplace is good for business. By thinking about inclusion, rather than accommodation, your workplace will be able to meet the needs of a diverse workforce, thereby reducing the need for specific accommodation. Creating and implementing policies and practices which focus on inclusion creates a more cohesive, positive and productive workplace. Brenda Picard Q.C. and Emily MacDonald will discuss how to refocus to think about inclusion and how to design and develop policies and practices that create safer and inclusive workplaces.

Bullying and Harassment in the Workplace

The session will focus on harassment and bullying in the workplace. In particular, time will be spent looking at the forthcoming legislative changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, which will require all employers to have a harassment and bullying policy, a complaints procedure including an investigations procedure for resolving complaints of bullying and harassment. The session will also deal with policy needs and/or amendments for employers to be prepared for these legislative changes. Finally, time will be spent on helping to prepare for, conduct and conclude investigations with a strong written report. Stephen Carpenter, Senior Legal Advisor for the Workers Compensation Board of PEI, will lead this section of the agenda.

How am I Doing? Shifting from Appraising to Managing Performance
Date:  April 2, 2019
Time: Registration beginning at 8:30.  Workshop 9:00am – 12:00pm
Location: Rodd Royalty, Charlottetown, PE

This professional development session will focus on employee performance. More specifically, we will focus on shifting from just appraising, to managing performance. Although performance appraisals are great for evaluating employees, they too often do not lead to actual performance improvements. By the end of this session, you will have learned some key principles to help you implement performance management practices in your organization. In addition, we will discuss the importance of managing performance at the employee, team and organizational level. This session will end with a Q & A discussion, based on questions provided in advance by those in attendance.
